Engineering Degree to Offer Science, Business Preparation

Sarah Bahari

The University of North Texas' College of Engineering has launched the state's first graduate degree program in engineering systems, an emerging field that will provide students with a foundation in engineering and technology innovation.

The master of science program will offer new concentrations in construction management and engineering management, as well as the already established concentrations in mechanical technology and electronics technology.

"This degree will give UNT students a strong background in engineering as well as a focus on business and technology innovation," said Dr. Nourredine Boubekri, chair of the Department of Engineering Technology and interim chair of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering. "Companies are looking for people who have engineering educations but also are also capable of making business decisions."

The graduate degree was launched this semester due to significant demand for construction management and engineering management. Both of these concentrations have been developed in collaboration with a number of departments in the College of Business.

UNT also offers a dual masters degree in engineering systems and an MBA in business administration with a concentration in operations and supply chain management. Students take courses from the College of Engineering and College of Business and can complete their degrees in three years.

Boubekri said the dual program will allow students to better comprehend how business and engineering intermingle.
