Science Education Position Announcement
Assistant or Associate Professor, School of Education

The Department of Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education is seeking applicants for a tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of science education starting August 2018. Requirements include: 1) an earned doctorate by August 2018 in science education or another closely related field such as curriculum studies, instructional technology, educational psychology or the learning sciences with a focus on science teaching and learning; 2) a promising and clearly defined practice-oriented research agenda; and 3) an established or emerging record of publication in practice-oriented scholarly journals. For the Associate Professor level, there should be a track record of external grant funding. Other desirable characteristics include practitioner experience in science learning contexts, experience teaching methods courses at the university level, a research and practice focus on social justice or equity, and working in collaboration with historically marginalized students.

This appointment is part of a broader vision regarding how the School of Education can grow its science education program to include faculty members who possess complementary strengths of professional practice and research, and who, together, will build strong research-practice partnerships that both develop fundamental knowledge in the teaching and learning of science and iteratively design and improve professional development programs for schools, informal settings, and intermediaries. Core responsibilities for this position will include designing and teaching courses and advising students (with a focus on the STEM EdD program), teaching in the teacher education program, designing a new online M.Ed. program, and working with leaders in the department and school to build a Ph.D. program that will attract the best faculty and students in the country in the area of science education. The candidate will benefit from a rich array of resources in both research and practice at the school and university including the Center for Urban Education, the Institute for Learning, and the Learning Research and Development Center.

The U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Pittsburgh School of Education as one of the "best Graduate Schools in Education." Faculty and graduate students are involved in a variety of partnerships across the Pittsburgh region including work with the RAND Corporation, Carnegie Mellon University, and the National Robotics Engineering Center. Pittsburgh is repeatedly voted among the "Most Livable Cities," with affordable cost of living and access to a wide array of seasonal recreation opportunities, professional and collegiate athletic events, and a vibrant cultural district.
