Associate Dean, Equity and Justice in Education Position Announcement

School of Education

POSITION: Associate Dean for Equity and Justice in Education, Professor or Associate Professor. This position is a full-time tenured position, beginning August 2018.
DESCRIPTION: The University of Pittsburgh School of Education is seeking an Associate Dean who will advance initiatives in equity and justice in education. The Associate Dean will join the School’s senior leadership team at a time of growing optimism for engaging in transformative educational practices and fostering a positive, collective impact in education. This newly created position in the School of Education, situated in the Office of the Dean, will help to facilitate the development of programs, policies, and practices that promote critical understandings of equity and justice in education in both the School and in the larger Community. This will include, among other responsibilities, supporting the engagement of faculty, staff, and students in high-quality research, outreach, recruitment, and advocacy efforts that advance social, civil, and educational rights; cultivating equity and justice in the School with respect to teaching, research, and engagement; enhancing partnerships in equity and justice in education with various groups and organizations in Pittsburgh and across Western Pennsylvania; creating educational initiatives and designing learning spaces that link equity and justice to excellence in education through transformative policies and practices; and collaborating with the various Centers and Institutes in the School to advance equity and justice initiatives in education.
This new position of Associate Dean of Equity and Justice is at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure, starting August 2018. The person in this position will have a faculty appointment in one of the School’s academic departments (e.g., instruction and learning, administrative and policy studies, health and physical activities, and psychology in education) or centers (learning sciences and policy and urban education).

QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements include: 1) An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the academic disciplines represented in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh; 2) A demonstrated record of scholarship that merits a tenured faculty appointment as an associate or a full professor; 3) Evidence of an established record of activism, leadership, and mentorship and a strong desire to engage in important initiatives that centralize equity and justice in education; 4) Demonstrated knowledge in research and practice in equity, justice, anti-racism, engagement, and critical, decolonizing methodologies in education; 5) Experience with designing and leading new initiatives or programs that advance the equity and justice mission of an academic department, unit, or School; 6) Demonstrated commitment to proactive recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, staff, and students; and 7) A commitment to work in a team-oriented, creative, and dynamic School of Education.
