Graduate Studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a full-time faculty position to serve as program director of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at an art and design college nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, the high quality of its graduate programs, and its distinction in art education at national and international levels.

The program director is a faculty position with administrative responsibilities on a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning August 2018.

Job Description:
Graduate Studies at MICA seeks a candidate with significant professional experience in art education to serve as a full-time faculty member and director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, a Maryland State Approved Program for art teacher certification in grades preK-12.

The MAT program seeks candidates with a global perspective and who are committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in the field of art education. Ideal candidates will be open to exploring innovative ways to craft curricula, experiences, and projects that empower students to teach with confidence in Maryland classroom settings and beyond. Successful candidates will synthesize the theoretical and practical dimensions of teaching art and design, including familiarity with new technologies and emerging subject areas that contribute to student engagement. They should have experience developing student-centered programs and pedagogical approaches relevant to students in school systems rich in diversity, and at the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, and class. In addition to demonstrating the ability to develop a strategic vision and set the future direction for this innovative, practice-based MA, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to be a significant contributor to the field by continuing MICA’s legacy of leadership in art education at state, national, and international levels.

The director will assume the administrative responsibilities of the graduate program, including the oversight of curriculum, academic programming, program assessment, student advising, budget management, accreditation, and the ongoing development of external partnerships with local schools and school systems. The program director collaborates closely with the Coordinator for Undergraduate Art Education, oversees departmental full-time faculty, their schedules, reviews, annual contracts, and mentoring. The program director hires adjunct faculty as needed. The faculty/program director position is the equivalent of 18 credits per year, or 3 – 4 days per week on campus, split between teaching and administrative roles.

The program director is expected to contribute to the life of Graduate Studies and the College through cross-programmatic collaboration, committee work, graduate admissions, community engagement, and other institution-related duties. All full-time faculty at MICA are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the College.

The position reports to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies and participates in regular graduate program director meetings with other "field-based" programs.

● PhD or EdD in Art Education
● More than 5-years full-time teaching experience at elementary and/or secondary level or substantial experience in other educational settings (such as museums, etc.)
● Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity in art and design education
● Minimum of 5 years of full-time college teaching experience
● Demonstrated skills in clinical supervision
● Knowledge of current literature for teacher preparation
● Knowledge of the way in which digital technologies and contemporary design practices inform teaching and learning in K-12 settings
● Studio expertise and/or arts-based research practice
● Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative teaching situations including, but not limited to, team teaching, aligned coursework, & teamed project-based learning
● Experience with academic program management, faculty mentorship, and/or other administrative responsibilities
● Working knowledge of edTPA
● Knowledge of current practices in student learning assessment
● Excellent communication skills
● Demonstrated leadership experience as a contributor or advocate for art education at local, state, national and/or international levels through public presentations or professional publication of art education theory and practice

Valued, but not required:
● Demonstrated knowledge of child & adolescent development
● Facility and knowledge of maker spaces and their integration in schools and teaching
● Community organizing for the arts
● Evidence of involvement in innovative program/curriculum design (K-graduate)
● Evidence of ability to work with colleagues across institutional disciplinary boundaries
● Interest or experience in teaching online, flipped, hybrid, or alternatively scheduled course formats
● Active membership in relevant professional association(s)

In addition to studio, art education, art history/criticism, and internship courses, six credits in the teaching of reading are integrated into the program.

MICA’s MAT program is nationally recognized for faculty and student publications and its success preparing art education professionals who successfully integrate personal artistry with the skill and understanding to direct the creative explorations of others. In the last two years, MICA and MAT has hosted the Maryland Art Education conference on campus.
