The Dean, reporting to senior executive management, oversees a school, division, academic program and/or function to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. He/she develops long- and short-range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. He/she fosters a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.

Lehman College of The City University of New York is seeking a Dean for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies functions as the College’s outreach to the community, creating programs and career pathways targeted towards Bronx residents and surrounding regions. The School offers a variety of credit and non-credit educational programs through its Adult Degree Program and Continuing Education Programs offered at both the Lehman campus and CUNY on the Concourse.

The overall goal is to provide the community with workforce development services that emphasize higher education access and professional training through diverse programs. The Dean is responsible for the operations of the School overseeing a budget of approximately $5 million with 10,000 students, 250 instructors and staff (full- and part-time), over 300 non-credit courses (both in class and online) in allied health, education, health information management, business, computer, professional licensures, professional development, college and professional test preparation, and personal development; 35 credit and non-credit certificate programs, children’s programs as well as the Adult Degree Program (a bachelor’s and master’s degree program designed to meet the special needs of mature men and women with family and work responsibilities). The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Deans’ Council and Provost’s Council.


  • Provides strategic and operational leadership and planning and the formulation of goals, policies and procedures for the school.
  • Provides visionary and strategic leadership to faculty, instructors and staff in fulfilling the school’s mission of outreach, continuing education, and public service.
  • Articulates the vision and establishes the importance and relevance of continuing and professional education, particularly certification programs.
  • Advances lifelong learning, community outreach and development, and collaboration with other schools, divisions and departments.


  • Provides leadership in developing, implementing, and sustaining curricula and programs that respond to community needs and prepares students for success; enhances the school’s marketability to address high demand areas.
  • Provides strong, decisive leadership for the operation, services and resources of the school including support for extension centers (e.g. CUNY on the Concourse) in collaboration with a diverse group of directors, encouraging positive collaboration and synergistic team work within the whole School.
  • Establishes continuous, proactive and creative improvement of operations and programming and services for adult and non-traditional learners; reengineers work processes and implements new technology solutions; conducts ongoing assessment of best practices; obtains feedback from internal and external constituents to ensure internal controls and procedures are strengthened and services are delivered efficiently and performance goals and targets are achieved.
  • Leads retention and graduation initiatives.
  • Represents Lehman College with external constituencies, locally and internationally, in business and industry sectors.


  • Provides effective oversight of financial resources; leads fundraising efforts for the school.
  • Diversifies and increases resource streams and funding for projects from not-for-profit, labor unions, governmental agencies and private corporations; generates revenue through grant writing and contract courses; develops and maintains public/private partnerships.
  • Ensures continuous quality improvement in all credit and non-credit programs including onsite training and children’s programs.
  • Maintains records and statistical data on the school and formulates reports for internal and external constituents.


  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and administration in the development of short- and long-term strategic and tactical plans for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
  • Ensures an effective organizational structure, including allocation of staff, and formulation of decision-making groups and committees.
  • Cultivates positive working relationships across the college to build customer confidence and satisfaction and promote a school culture of customer service, innovation, and quality services to students, staff and the community.
  • Collaborates with the college community to strengthen the connections between credit and not-for-credit programs.

This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a visionary, innovative and entrepreneurial leadership style; have a proven record of accomplishments in strategic planning, budget management, diversifying revenue streams, program development including workforce development and initiating creative solutions to the needs of students, corporations and community organizations while maintaining and enhancing program quality and student support services. Candidates should have a successful record serving as a key contributor to an executive leadership team, possess strong teambuilding skills as well as excellent communication, interpersonal and proactive problem solving skills, and interact effectively with a range of constituencies. A doctorate, or an equivalent terminal degree is preferred plus a minimum of eight years experience in continuing education and workforce development and progressively responsible managerial experience.

Appointment to an academic unit is possible depending on the applicant’s academic background and experience.

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
