Faculty - Non Tenure Track - ASL & Deaf Studies (one year)


Position Category: Faculty - Non Tenure Track (FT)

Summary:

Utah Valley University is seeking a Lecturer (one-year) to teach in the Department of Languages and the ASL and Deaf Studies Program. This individual will perform some or all of the following duties: plan, prepare, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught (as assignedtypically 15 credit hours per semester); prepare instructional materials, i.e. exams, course outlines, syllabi, visual aids, and instructions sheets as necessary; instruct, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in classroom and laboratories through lectures, discussions, conferences, demonstrations, field trips, individualized instruction and tutoring, and other appropriate media; evaluate instruction and learning by means of written, practical, and performance tests; maintain a student-oriented approach to education and advising; assist in student advisement, advancement and placement; maintain desirable classroom conditions; maintain accurate and current reports and records regarding student accountability, attendance, and performance; supervise extra-curricular activities as assigned; and establish and maintain office hours and attend department and school meetings.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a masters degree from an accredited university in a closely related field and two years of full-time teaching experience at the collegiate/university level (or equivalent) is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Intimate and extensive Deaf-World knowledge and experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of subject matter and course content of the courses to be taught which may include conversation, writing, grammar; instructional strategies and techniques; student management, motivation, evaluation; evaluation of instruction; program and curriculum development and evaluation; effective human relation skills and communication techniques.
  • Knowledge of and expertise in current trends in education, engaged learning and service learning, learning technologies (e.g. digital technologies for classroom management and distance education), public presenting and report writing.
  • Must have native or native-like fluency in American Sign Language and be fluent in (written) English, prepared in basic language teaching pedagogy.
  • Skills in classroom management.
  • Able to teach courses associated with the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Program. Preference given for specialty areas that complement current tenure and tenure-track faculty.
  • Ability to apply general principles to specific conditions, follow written and oral procedures and instructions.
  • Must be able to act civilly with students, colleagues, administrators, and others.

Physical requirements involve teaching, standing, sitting, computer interface, keyboard skills.
