ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LEADERSHIP STUDIES--FOCUS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Job Summary:

The USF School of Education invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position commencing Fall 2018 in: Social Justice Praxis in Higher Education & Student Affairs. The Assistant Professor will teach in two programs housed in the Department of Leadership Studies: M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) and M.A./Ed.D. in Organizational and Leadership.
The successful candidate should be an engaged scholar-practitioner of higher education with demonstrated professional experience in the field of higher education administration and/or student affairs and commitment to social justice. Specifically, we seek scholars who integrate research and practice in the examination of inequity and oppression within higher education through critical lenses.

The HESA and O&L Programs:
The HESA and O&L programs at USF seek to prepare students to be transformational leaders in higher education and other educational contexts. Specifically, HESA is a cohort-based, nationally-competitive program that enrolls primarily first-generation students, students of color, queer and low-income students. The HESA program prepares students to work in student affairs to improve access to and experiences within higher education for students from marginalized backgrounds.
Within the O&L program, a growing number of students are focused on higher education leadership with a social justice, equity-minded approach. As a result there is a greater need for faculty with higher education and student affairs expertise to support these students and provide courses that develop them professionally.

Job Summary:

Job Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include: teaching courses in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Organizational Leadership in Higher Education and research methodologies in Education, as well as courses in the candidates area of research expertise; contributing to program, Department and overall curriculum of the School of Education; conducting research and publishing scholarly work in education that centers on inequity in higher education; centers praxis within teaching, scholarship, and engagement with communities centered within their work; supervising students on thesis/field projects and doctoral dissertations; assisting with student recruitment and advising; and contributing to the School of Education and university initiatives and mission, including building partnerships with schools and communities. Additionally, this person will also be responsible for managing HESA student internship and practicum responsibilities in coordination with core HESA faculty and partners in Student Life.

Minimum Requirements:

The successful candidate should have a program of research that addresses critical issues in higher education and the ability to teach and serve within the HESA program specifically and put forward scholarship centered on advancing social justice practice of engaged scholar-practitioners in higher education and student affairs.The candidate should have: (1) an EdD or PhD in Higher Education, Educational Leadership or a related field with an emphasis on critical praxis; and (2) demonstrated experience working in the field of student affairs particularly with marginalized student populations. Specifically, we seek candidates with a scholar-practitioner orientation and who engage critical theories in research and practice with a focused analysis of the relationship between systems of oppression and experiences to and through higher education. The candidates research should be social justice-oriented and interdisciplinary (i.e., anthropology, sociology, political geography, feminist studies, and/or cultural studies) and informed by the premise that educational knowledge should promote the democratization of higher education and society. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong grounding in engaged-scholarship with higher education institutions and communities, who employ innovative uses of critical qualitative, critical quantitative, or critical mixed methods.
