Faculty - Assistant Professor - Language Pedagogy


Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

Summary:

The department of Languages at Utah Valley University is seeking a Tenure Track - Assistant Professor. The assistant professor will be responsible for teaching and pedagogy related activities and appropriate professional development related to teaching. The position includes a teaching load of 12 credit hours a semester, departmental and university service assignments and coordinator/administrative responsibilities. There is also a possibility of reassigned time for some administrative responsibilities. This position supports and seeks always to fulfill the guiding concepts for the university which are embodied in UVU's Mission.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate in Language Pedagogy with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. ABD candidates in progress of doctoral completion will be accepted.
  • Be specialized in language teaching pedagogy. Be willing and able to teach both lower and upper division courses.
  • Have native command of both English as well as one of the following languages: American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.
  • Have experience assessing student learning capabilities and learning styles and understand how to develop curriculum of assigned courses.
  • Two years of college or university teaching experience (or equivalent).
  • Experience at public schools secondary education level with a current teaching license.
  • Be able to work Monday through Friday with variable hours from morning to evening depending on class times and able to keep regular office hours.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidates should demonstrate advanced knowledge in the areas of Second Language Acquisition and L2 pedagogy, and should be able to effectively engage with teacher education candidates in content instruction, including current instructional theories, practices, and strategies in language education. Experience in curriculum and course development preferred. Knowledge of student recruitment and retention practices and the ability to work across departments and schools within the College required. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively in both individual and group settings, and will be able to serve in a supervisory role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current on ACTFL initiatives and be OPI certified.
  • Knowledge and evidence of instructional technology applied to language teaching.
  • Knowledge and evidence of delivering instruction for all communicative skills, language assessment and teaching culture.
  • Knowledge of current principles and methodologies of language learning and teaching of subject matter and course content.


Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
Lifting up to 10 lbs.
