Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Higher Education Studies

The Institute for Post-School Studies (IPSS) is an institute of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), located within the Faculty of Education. The IPSS includes studies in higher education, adult education and vocational education. Relevant research, teaching, and development activities across the three domains of the IPSS contribute towards growing the knowledge base on post-schooling particularly in Africa and globally. The IPSS is committed to strengthening research capacity through relevant postgraduate programmes that also utilise the academic networks within and beyond the African continent. IPSS priorities include promoting international conferences, workshops on higher education theory and research methodology, academic writing and publishing, research and policy project design and advocacy.

The IPSS Higher Education Studies (HES) programme invites one (1) Post-doctoral research fellow to be appointed as of 1st February, 2018.
Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the Post-doctoral position the applicant:
Must hold a doctoral degree obtained within the last 5 years, preferably in Statistics of (higher) Education, Economics of (higher) education or related disciplines/fields and Statistics
a. Must be an African national
b. Must not be above 40 years
c. Must be very competent in the application of statistical software packages in data analysis
d. Fluent in the English Language
e. Be able to make a substantial contribution to teaching, research and publications in the field of HES.
f. Must be able to start on 1st February, 2018

Application requirements

  • Full transcripts of academic record and certified copy of doctoral degree certificate;
  • Full Curriculum Vitae including a list of research publications, conference papers and other scholarly output;
  • Motivation letter, including a narrative of not more than 1000 words outlining relevant expertise and experience;
  • Copy of ID document (or copy of passports in the case of foreign applicants);
  • Contact details of two academic referees who have taught/supervised the candidate.

Duration of the fellowship
The post-doctoral research fellowship is a 12-month contract. The position is a full- time research intensive fellowship in accordance with the regulations of the UWC. The successful post-doctoral fellow would be expected to perform research within the scope of projects and other related tasks assigned by the post-doctoral supervisor and academic mentor.
The main tasks for the post-doctoral fellow will be:

  • To assist and mentor doctoral students admitted to the programme;
  • Design and conduct studies that will be undertaken under the supervision and mentorship of the programme coordinator and a team of highly reputable experts in the field;
  • Co- supervision of post graduate students;
  • Co- writing of funding proposals;
  • Presentations at relevant local and international scholarly conferences, and;
  • Co-organising doctoral seminars and other academic events in the IPSS
