The Department of Education at Simmons University is accepting applications for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor of Practice level. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track contract position with the possibility of renewal. The job responsibilities are divided between instruction and program administration.

The Department of Education offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level, and licensure programs in Elementary Education and Special Education at the graduate level. Our programs in Special Education include Moderate Disabilities and Severe Disabilities. All of our programs are approved for licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Our faculty are experienced educators and respected scholars who share a passion for teaching and mentoring students.

We seek an engaging instructor with demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness with students at the undergraduate and graduate level to teach in our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. This program leads to elementary initial teaching license. In addition, this appointment includes assuming responsibility for the following administrative duties: Pre-Practicum Coordinator for the MAT Program, Pre-Practicum Coordinator for the Special Education programs (on-campus and off-site), and Placement Coordinator of off-site students completing fieldwork in inclusion and English Language Learner classroom settings.

The ideal candidate will possess the knowledge of the major issues confronting educators today; will demonstrate innovative ways to address them; and will bring professional experience, energy, and insight to students considering the field of education.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching
  • This faculty position will teach across the General Education curriculum and will assume responsibility for course planning, classroom teaching and evaluation of four courses per year. The content and pedagogical areas include: classroom practices and strategies for inclusion; introductory education courses for undergraduates; and instructional methods in either math, science, or social studies for the elementary classroom.


Administrative Duties
  • Pre-Practicum and coordination for the MAT Program
    • Includes overseeing supervision activities of our teacher candidates in their pre-practicum including observations, assessments, record-keeping, and coordinating with practicum coordinators.


  • Pre-Practicum and Practicum placement and coordination for our on-campus and off-site Special Education Programs


  • Includes overseeing supervision activities of our teacher candidates in their pre-practicum including observations, assessments, record-keeping, and coordinating with practicum coordinators.


  • Oversight of placement and fieldwork for off-site students in inclusion and English Language Learner classroom settings.


Qualifications
  • Master's in Education required.
  • An active Massachusetts teaching license required.
  • A PhD or Doctorate in education or in an allied field preferred.
  • Background in teaching either social sciences, science or math at the elementary level (grades 1-6) for at least five years required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching in diverse communities required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teacher preparation faculty and other school-based colleagues required.
  • Previous practicum supervision experience required.
