The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Graduate School seeks an inaugural Director for a new Faculty Teaching and Learning Center within the Office of Academic Affairs who will advance, support, and sustain an inclusive culture of academic excellence across the Institution. UMB is Maryland’s only public health, law, and human services university. Six professional schools and a Graduate School confer the majority of health care, human services, and law professional degrees in Maryland each year. One of UMB’s key strategic priorities is student success including designing contemporary teaching and learning environments that prepare students to be exemplary professionals and leaders in society. The Director will have a full time non-tenure track faculty appointment in the UMB Graduate School and will have an administrative appointment in the Office of Academic Affairs.

The Office of Academic Affairs is expanding services to include supporting faculty in the generation and nurturing of ideas related to innovation in teaching and learning, assessment for learning, as well as providing faculty with tools and instruction related to pedagogy, curriculum development, learning research, and scholarship. The Director will shape and implement a mission for the Center that establishes it as a vital, trusted source of expertise and support for teaching, learning and assessment at UMB.

This position will take a lead role in the development of a proposed interprofessional PhD Program in Health Professions Education. The Director will be expected to teach 3-credits per semester in the program once the first cohort of students has matriculated.


The Director will possess meaningful experience in the areas of faculty and/or organizational development, and a record of teaching in health and human services education. The Director will play an active role in developing faculty in teaching ultimately facilitating student success, which includes: 1) consulting with individual faculty to apply pedagogical concepts and theories, implementing classroom technologies, and assessing teaching and learning; 2) assisting academic curricular and co-curricular design; and 3) leading and providing support for innovations and initiatives in teaching and learning. The Director will require strong collaboration skills and will partner with leaders and faculty across all of UMB’s seven schools. The Director of the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center will report to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and will also be accountable to the Assistant Dean of Academic Programs in the Graduate School.


  • Plan and implement faculty development programs in teaching and learning for existing and new faculty.
  • Seek to advance current research and scholarship on learning (cognitive, affective, etc.) with attention to learning settings at UMB: classroom, clerkships, field practicums, and simulation laboratories.
  • Support a collaborative approach to assessment for learning that reaches across disciplines and schools.
  • Manage the Graduate School Academic Innovation and Distance Education unit and scale based on need and resources.
  • Develop research-based programming for inclusive pedagogies that support UMB’s diverse and multinational student body.
  • Promote student, faculty and institutional learning through assessment that is tied to equitable opportunities and outcomes for all students (online and face to face).
  • Faculty Duties, including:
    - Demonstrate and model excellence in teaching and learning within the graduate school.
    - Teach 3-credits per semester in the PhD in Health Professions Education program.
    - Mentor and support graduate students in their educational research and dissertation process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (at Doctoral level), in a related field
  • At least 3 years of relevant work and experience in the areas of teaching, learning, faculty development and/or assessment in higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Experience with program planning and assessment for learning practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse groups of faculty, staff and students.
  • Experience with inclusive pedagogies and equity-based programming online and face to face.
  • Experience with the application of educational technologies in teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Strong communication skills – verbal, written and visual.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in adult learning and clinical pedagogies.
  • Experience and knowledge of the research and practice in teaching and learning in the health and human services professions.
  • Experience and knowledge of research-based approaches to curriculum development and pedagogy that support and sustain inclusion and equity.
  • Experience with the design, implementation, and assessment of faculty health and human services professional development programs, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated managerial and operational experience, including the ability to set and manage a budget, to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to delegate responsibility.
