Assistant/Associate Professor in Literacy Education (Tenure Track) Theory and Practice in Teacher Education College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville
The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee seeks applicants for an assistant or associate professor to contribute to research and teaching in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE). TPTE offers programs of study that lead to initial teacher licensure and endorsement in many areas; a graduate urban specialist certificate; and masters, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. We seek a new faculty member in literacy education to join an active research and teaching community. Position begins August 2018.

We are looking for a scholar who can engage in substantive research in the development of literacy in children and adolescents; literacy education in preK-12 classrooms; and in-service teacher development and initial teacher preparation in literacy education. Such a research program may include exploring reading and writing as reciprocal processes, literacy as underpinning second language acquisition, literacy achievement as related to opportunity to learn in diverse or marginalized communities, and literacy assessment and intervention. We are looking for a scholar with knowledge in the design and implementation of innovations in literacy teaching and learning, including the use of technology and attention to the social, cultural, and political aspects of literacy. Teaching and learning responsibilities include supporting the undergraduate and graduate programs in TPTE through teaching relevant coursework and advising. In addition, this position calls for working cooperatively and developing relationships with other University departments related to literacy education.

Required Qualifications: Applicants for this 9-month tenure-track position should hold a Ph. D. or an Ed. D. in literacy education, or a nearly completed doctoral degree, have 3 or more years of teaching experience in preK-12 schools, provide evidence of strong potential in scholarly activity, and have experience in responding to cultural, linguistic, ability, and ethnic diversity. In addition, applicants should demonstrate an understanding of the current landscape of literacy education, including standards and key challenges.
Desired Qualifications: Applicants who demonstrate proficiency in quantitative analyses and/or a high level of interest in the pursuit of external funding will be given strong consideration. Additional desired qualities include: expertise in emergent literacy, a developed preK-12 research agenda, demonstrated interest and ability to teach coursework as part of our Literacy Specialist program, demonstrated ability to integrate technology into teaching and learning, and an interest in mentoring doctoral students. Applicants with experience as a licensed preK-12 literacy specialist are preferred.
