Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) in their search for an accomplished leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Education.

This is a remarkable opportunity to join a university experiencing record growth, increased retention rates and enrollment of its most academically accomplished first-year class. For the fourth straight year enrollment has grown rising 6.3%. This past fall, retention increased 3.5% along with a nearly 13% increase in transfer students.

This position is ideal for an accomplished leader and change agent who is committed to the preparation of professional educators and human service leaders, the advancement of research and practice, and the improvement in the quality of life for all people. The successful candidate is a pioneer who will lead integration of the latest trends in higher education into the College’s strategic plan. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to transform the newly named college for the future.

The Dean of the College of Education is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and, as a member of the Deans Council, works closely with other deans and members of the Academic Affairs staff. The dean provides strong leadership, vision and support to a college of approximately 75 faculty, including four chairs. The College of Education offers bachelors, master’s and PhD degrees through the following departments: Administration and Instructional Services, Counseling, Educator Preparation, and Leadership Studies and Adult Education.

Leadership and Management Responsibilities

The Dean will be responsible for the administration of instructional and research programs, budgetary management, faculty development, human resource management, grantsmanship and fundraising, evaluation and assessment of educational programs, and developing and maintaining high academic standards for the community of scholars in the College.

The Dean also oversees recruitment; evaluation; reappointment, promotion and tenure of faculty; supports faculty development in teaching, scholarship, research, and grant procurement; and actively participates in fundraising.

The Dean will supervise program assessments, as well as work collaboratively with others in implementing and updating the long-range strategic vision and plan for the College.

Required Degree and Qualifications

  • An earned Doctorate in education or related field
  • Proven record of teaching, research and scholarship, service, and grant procurement appropriate for an appointment to the faculty as a tenured full professor
  • Teaching and administrative experience in higher education
  • At least three years leadership and administrative experience
  • Strong record of research
  • Excellent fundraising skills – grant procurement or key stakeholders in the community
  • Experience working with certification or boards, including CACREP, SACS, and CAEP
  • Demonstrated success in developing internal and external strategic partnerships, with K-12 and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership
  • Experience in selecting, evaluating, promoting and retaining high quality faculty and staff
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member

The University

N.C. A&T, located in Greensboro, NC, is a public, doctoral/research, 1890 land-grant university committed to exemplary teaching and learning, scholarly and creative research, and effective engagement and public service.

Dr. Harold L. Martin Sr., an N.C. A&T alumnus, has served as Chancellor since 2009. The North Carolina A&T Aggies compete in Division I of the NCAA and have been a member of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference since 1969.
Academics and Research. One of the 17 campuses in the University of North Carolina system, N.C. A&T is a high research activity, doctorate-granting university, with over 12,000 students in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; College of Business and Economics, College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Science and Technology, and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, which is in collaboration with The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The University offers 55 undergraduate degrees, 29 master’s degrees and 9 PhD programs. The 2017-18 academic year brought about significant success for N.C. The College of Education

The teacher education programs within the College of Education are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Preparation (CAEP) and are approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. All of the counselor programs within the College of Education are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP).
