The Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) and the Dartmouth Digital Applied Learning and Innovation (DALI) Lab seek enthusiastic candidates for a position focused on Data Science Education in STEM and the social sciences. The two-year position is funded as part of the DIFUSE project (NSF-1917002) with a possible extension to a third year if funds become available. The project goal is to expose students to the ideas and techniques of data science early in their collegiate careers, with an increase of interest and training as desired outcomes (see difuse.dartmouth.edu for more information). DIFUSE brings together teams of undergraduates, graduate students, learning designers, and faculty to design modules that bring data science techniques into STEM courses. After having built several modules, DIFUSE will host a workshop in Summer 2022 for educators from other institutions to learn both the methodology and outcomes of the project’s work. The PIs on the grant span several disciplines – engineering, mathematics, and computer science, all of which may host the fellowship. One PI serves as the Director of DCAL and another is the director of the DALI lab.

The fellow’s primary responsibilities include

Designing and implementing additional DIFUSE data science modules with teams of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates
Developing content for and delivering a summer workshop for dissemination of data science learning modules to faculty in the sciences, social sciences, engineering, and mathematics from other colleges and universities
Assisting with evaluation of learning modules and workshop activities
Collaborating with the DIFUSE team to publish and disseminate results

Dartmouth hosts and supports the educational community through professional development and career placement. One of Dartmouth’s primary liaisons to the community of fellows is an Associate Director in DCAL and will serve as a direct resource.

The successful candidate has a MA or PhD (the latter is preferred) in computer science, physical or natural science, engineering, mathematics, or social science; interest in data science; and experience teaching and developing STEM educational materials. Additionally, experience in educational assessment or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desirable. The candidate possesses strong written and verbal skills and communicates effectively with faculty, staff, and students. They easily work independently as well as collaboratively with a team.

This position may be either in-person or remote work. A remote fellow would visit campus on several occasions, including the Summer 2022 workshop.

Candidates should send a cover letter, names of 3 references, a CV, and a brief (1-2 page) description of relevant experience to scott.d.pauls@dartmouth.edu. Evaluation of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
