The Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, invites applications for the inaugural Mark J. and Elizabeth A. Czarnecki Professor of Literacy Education, in the Department of Learning and Instruction. We seek a world-class scholar to join a collaborative, pragmatic group of scholars who are committed to conducting school-based research on reading, writing, and literacy instruction in P-12 settings in order to transform public school education. The Department of Learning and Instruction has a long history of research excellence and a strong tradition of teaching and community engagement. Faculty demonstrate a commitment to creating a collegial academic environment characterized by equity, social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration, an ethic of care, and research demonstrating an impact on children and youth, schools, or communities.

The Czarnecki Endowed Professor will join the UB Graduate School of Education at an exciting time with additional faculty hires in literacy, established and growing community partnerships, a nationally recognized teacher residency program, and a newly funded initiative for the Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction (CLaRI). Candidates for the Czarnecki Professor of Literacy Education must demonstrate a record of sustained peer-reviewed publications and scholarship with proven ability to receive external research funding. As an Endowed Professor, candidates are expected to use their expertise to bolster research related to CLaRI with a particular focus on intervention-based research grounded in asset-based frameworks. Candidates should be committed to conducting research for students in historically underserved school settings that include culturally and linguistically diverse students. Research interests should align with a commitment to providing access to high-quality literacy instruction and evidence-based practices in school-based settings.

Responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining an active and productive research agenda commensurate with a Research 1 Endowed Professor appointment
  • Seeking and obtaining external research funding and providing leadership on grant initiatives
  • Teaching and advising graduate students in literacy education
  • Serving as an institutional and professional leader and mentor within the field of literacy education

Appointments are for a ten-month academic year beginning in the Fall of 2025.

For full consideration, please submit your materials by October 1, 2024. The position will remain open until filled.
