Job Summary:

The University of West Florida School of Education (SOE) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Special Education. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) nine-month, tenure-earning position.

Candidates will be expected to teach classes in both online and face-to-face formats in the undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs; serve on university, college, and school committees, and participate in community engagement activities aligned to the school’s priorities and consistent with

partnership of local school districts.

Position Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Special Education or closely related doctoral degree/discipline from an accredited institution with documented expertise in special education, hold or have held state certification/licensure in special education, and have a minimum of three years of experience as a K-12 teacher serving students with disabilities. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to quality teaching with the ability to conduct research and publish consistently with an identifiable emerging or established research agenda.

  • Note: ABDs will be considered if all requirements for the doctorate degree are completed by the start date. Required Qualifications:

  • Record of, or potential for, excellence in university teaching, service, and scholarship including

  • publications, presentations, and grants

  • In-depth knowledge of High Impact Practices (HIPs) in special education, evidence-based instruction, strength-based philosophical orientation to teaching students with disabilities, inclusion, diverse populations, and research methods as well as knowledge of issues in special education literature

  • Competencies necessary to design, develop, and teach innovative online and face to face courses for teaching students with high and low incidence disabilities

  • Experience or evidence of potential to support and mentor doctoral candidates by serving as a committee

  • member and/or committee chair on doctoral dissertation committees

  • Commitment to purposeful mentoring of students.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with on campus colleagues as well as within professional groups nationally and within the state/region to promote the development of school excellence and personal professional growth

  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of multi-tiered systems of support with respect to students who exhibit challenging classroom behaviors

  • Potential for leadership in program planning and accreditation responsibilities

  • Experience with distance or online course delivery

  • Success with grant funding and/or grant-funded projects

  • Special Requirements or Considerations of the Job:

  • This position requires a criminal background screen

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
