Position Overview

The University of Kansas invites candidates to apply for a tenured faculty position as the Director of the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project – a joint appointment with the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies (LSI) and the Department of Applied Behavioral Science. The Juniper Gardens Children’s Project (JGCP), is a community-based research center affiliated with LSI at the University of Kansas (KU) since 1964. JGCP is one of 14 research centers in LSI at KU. The Director will hold a joint appointment (research and tenured faculty) within LSI and the Applied Behavioral Science Department at KU. Candidates will be considered at the Associate Professor/Associate Scientist or Full Professor/Senior Scientist level.

The Director must be a visionary leader and excellent communicator who will be responsible for advancing JGCP’s mission and overseeing the implementation of its strategic goals. JGCP’s mission is to promote children’s social well-being and academic achievement by improving the quality of their care and education through research. JGCP’s strategic goals include the development, facilitation, promotion, and dissemination of research; cultivation of the JGCP leadership team and research faculty; and maintaining excellent relationships with community and university partners.

The JGCP has a research faculty of 11 PhD-level investigators who are currently involved in conducting nationally prominent programs of research that include but are not limited to the following themes: (a) Learning and development in infants and young children, (b) Social, behavioral and academic school success, © Professional development and technical assistance to improve evaluation and practice, and (d) Advancements in technology, accessibility and equity in schools.

The JGCP research faculty also play key roles in research preparation at graduate and postdoctoral levels across multiple disciplines. The JGCP research faculty apply for and receive external funds from federal funding agencies such as the US Department of Education (Institute of Education Sciences and Office of Special Education Programs) and the US Department of Health and Human Services (National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Administration for Children and Families, and Administration for Community Living), the National Science Foundation (Cyberlearning and Future Learning Technologies, Discovery Research in K-12, Developmental Sciences), as well from state agencies and private foundations.

The Director will also be expected to assume lead responsibility in collaboration with the research faculty for generating external funding from public and private sources to maintain a significant program of national and international research related to the mission of the JGCP and the LSI. The Director will possess a robust interest and commitment to community-engaged research; promoting diversity, equity and inclusion practices in research and within the culture at JGCP; and translational science that enhances the lives of children and families.

The position is based at the Children’s Campus of Kansas City (CCKC), a state-of-the-art facility built in 2010 in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. Partners at the CCKC include Project Eagle, an Educare and Head Start program that provides center-based and home visiting services, and the Family Conservancy, which provides early education and technical assistance services throughout the Kansas City area.

Job Description

Scientist/Director, JGCP: (75%) / Professor, Applied Behavioral Sciences: (25%)

Leadership and Research Administration: (40%)

Support the mission and strategic vision of the JGCP and provide leadership in the implementation of the strategic plan and scholarly program continuity.
Stimulate, identify, and seek external funding across a variety of funding mechanisms and sources including federal (e.g., US Department of Education, US Department of Health and Human Services, National Science Foundation, etc.), state, and private funding agencies.
Mentor and lead JGCP research faculty and other partners’ grant proposal development and submission in support of their individual programs of research, and in leadership and service.
Analyze, maintain, support, and improve staff productivity (e.g., publications, funding, service, and teaching).
Provide scholarly, methodological and technical leadership.
Oversee the coordination and maintenance of research administration activities at JGCP including the preparation and monitoring of multi-year center budgets in accordance with KU and funding agency policies.
Represent JGCP on the Children’s Campus of Kansas City (CCKC) board and promote collaboration among the three CCKC partners.
Research Investigator/Research: (35% / 10%)
Design, prepare and submit grant proposals to external funding agencies linked to JGCP’s mission.​​​​
Manage the scientific and programmatic aspects of funded research projects in compliance with applicable laws and institutional policies.
Publish research results in scholarly journals and present findings at professional local and national conferences and meetings.
Recruit, train, and supervise research teams.
Teaching/Advising: (10%)
Serve as a faculty member in the Applied Behavioral Science Department at KU.
As part of a tenured academic appointment, the candidate will offer one course per academic year.
Serve as Advisor or Co-Advisor for doctoral students, and mentor postdoctoral researchers associated with research projects for which the Director serves as PI.
Provide pre-service, in-service and other academic education and training
Service: (5%)

Serve on committees at the university, local, national, and international levels

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through: (a) descriptions of research agenda and teaching philosophy in letter of application, (b) record of accomplishments and productivity included in curriculum vitae, and © information provided from three professional references.

PhD in early childhood, special education, behavior analysis, developmental/child psychology, educational psychology, counseling, social work, psychology or related field.
Record of multi-disciplinary organization and/or department leadership such as serving as an interdisciplinary organization director, department chair, or committee chair.
Evidence of external funding, as principal or co-principal investigator, from federal agencies such as US Department of Education, US Department of Health and Human Services, and/or the National Science Foundation; and directing a research team.
Evidence of established dissemination record over at least an eight-year period including peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
Minimum of eight years’ experience in research that aligns with the JGCP mission.
Minimum of eight years’ experience with Graduate and Postdoctoral education and teaching.
A strong record of service, as evidenced by participation on editorial review boards, grant review panels, professional organizations, state-level partnerships, or community advisory boards.
Eligibility for appointment with tenure at the rank of either Associate Professor/Associate Scientist or Full Professor/Senior Scientist
For appointment at the rank of Full Professor/Senior Scientist, all of the above are required. In addition, the individual must have an established record of excellence in funding and a well-established scholarly reputation for research and publication in their area of specialization, hold an active extramural grant, and be able to demonstrate excellence in outstanding teaching and mentoring abilities. Additionally, they should be significantly engaged in other professional activities including professional organizations, university committees, scientific review boards, etc. The candidate must meet KU standards for research, teaching, and service sufficient to qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.
