Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK), a Carnegie II Doctoral/Research Institution and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education and Human Performance (College). Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the dean is administratively responsible for creating, developing, managing and advancing the academic, research and outreach programs of the college. The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and by the State Board for Educator Certification.
Founded in 1925, TAMUK, a member of the Texas A&M University System, has a diverse student body of nearly 7,500 students representing 35 states and 43 countries. The university is designated as an HSI with approximately 74% Hispanic undergraduate students, generally from the South Texas region. The university is located in historic Kingsville, a friendly, safe city of 25,000 and home of the legendary King Ranch. Corpus Christi and its beaches are 40 miles to the northeast, and the border with Mexico is 120 miles to the south.
The college is home to three academic departments: Educational Leadership and Counseling, Teacher and Bilingual Education, and Health and Kinesiology. In addition, the Army ROTC, the Marc Cisneros Center for Young Children, and the King Ranch Family Trust Center for Early Childhood Education are also housed in the college. The faculty of the college oversee programs leading to 18 baccalaureate, 13 master’s and 2 doctoral degrees. Graduate programs include the nation’s first doctoral program in bilingual education and a doctoral program in educational leadership. The chairs of the three academic departments, director of the Center for Young Children, Army ROTC unit, and the staff of the dean’s office report to the dean.
The university seeks a strong visionary leader who will advocate for the College’s programs and needs while simultaneously contributing to the provost’s leadership team, and being mindful of the institutional mission. The dean should have a vision for collaborative initiatives among the diverse disciplines within the college, the University’s colleges and departments, as well as external constituents. The dean will also provide a multi-faceted administrative experience including personnel and budgetary management and experience in identifying new revenue streams and resources to advance the priorities of the college. It will be important to both understand and relate to the culture of South Texas and the HSI designation of TAMUK. A hallmark of TAMUK is the student-centered focus. The dean will work collaboratively with local and regional stakeholders, such as area public school superintendents, and have a thorough understanding of state, national and international issues facing the departments. The dean is expected to build upon the national and international reputation of the college and to continue the leadership position in academic and research areas.
Candidates for the position will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the college or in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated academic administrative experience in a position of chair or higher at a baccalaureate or higher degree granting institution. Preferred candidates will have administrative experience at a doctoral level institution. The dean is also expected to have experience in the promotion of excellence in teaching, research, and service; a record of generating external funding; a vision for program development to encourage student and faculty recruitment and retention; and experience with accreditation processes, long-range strategic planning, and program assessment that merit appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure grantable from a discipline within a department in the college.
