Position Description Summary
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Northern Illinois University is seeking qualified applicants for two permanent tenure-track positions in Literacy Education, (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor), with background, experience and a research focus in one or more of the following areas: early literacy/foundational skills, literacy in the elementary grades, and/or literacy coaching/ literacy leadership. This search is part of a cluster hire in anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. The qualified candidates will be expected to work and teach across multiple programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. While not all candidates will engage in each area, key expectations include demonstrating commitment to the academic success of a diverse student population through teaching and service activity; examining the impact of anti-racism programs among pre-service and in-service educators; engaging with stakeholders in identifying and implementing solutions to increase academic equity and inclusion; developing, implementing, and investigating programs to support students to timely degree completion; or creating and researching programs that serve the social and emotional learning of underserved populations. Qualified candidates should demonstrate an ability to work and research collaboratively with internal and external partners, including across college and university units, research centers, and community organizations. Given the increasing emergent multilingual population in northern Illinois, we are particularly interested in applicants with multilingual teaching backgrounds.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares socially responsible practitioner scholars to work and learn within multicultural and multilingual contexts. The department is committed to responsive teaching, learning, and leadership in the fields of literacy, science, and social studies for all learners. More significantly, the department is committed to doing the work that equity, social justice, and anti-racism demand.

In addition, the candidate is expected to engage in scholarship in early literacy/foundational skills, elementary/intermediate grades, literacy coaching, or literacy leadership; participate in developing innovative undergraduate and graduate teacher education and professional development; participate in school-university partnerships; advise doctoral students, and direct thesis and dissertations. Off-campus and online teaching is common and expected.
This is a nine-month appointment and salary will be competitive. Summer teaching is available based on program need and available resources.

The faculty hired will be expected to collaborate with cluster initiative faculty as well as College of Education faculty across all departments. Successful candidates will develop a program of scholarship and compete for federal funding and build networks across the campus and community.
