Position. The School of Education in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Higher Education Policy. The candidate should be an outstanding scholar whose work explores the longitudinal impact of policy on equity, access and persistence in post-secondary education. The primary appointment for this position will be in the School of Education, but may include a joint appointment in one of our collaborating schools/departments: Biden School of Public Policy and Administration, Department of Economics in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, or the Sociology or Political Science Departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. The anticipated start date of this position is August 16, 2020.
Qualifications and Responsibilities. A doctoral degree in education, education policy, higher education, special education, economics, or a related social science field is required. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of rigorous and innovative scholarship. Specific areas of focus may include but are not limited to the K-12 to college pipeline; issues of student access and persistence; the trajectories of historically underrepresented students, including first-generation students; and/or community, technical and for-profit colleges as well as four-year institutions. The candidate will have secured or demonstrated the potential to secure external funding for their research. In addition to research, responsibilities will include supervising and teaching students in our EdD program in Educational Leadership. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of or potential for excellence in teaching. In teaching, research and all of their work, the ideal candidate will show a commitment to and capacity for creating and sustaining diversity and equity.
The University of Delaware, College of Education and Human Development, and the School of Education. CEHD is a vibrant, dynamic college, home to the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education. CEHD employs approximately 60 tenure track faculty who educate over 1500 undergraduates and 350 graduate students, and has more than $21.5M in external research funds from major funding organizations such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. CEHD has twelve research and public service centers working at the intersection of research and practice in areas such as teacher professional development, curriculum, school leadership and special education. College faculty conduct cutting-edge research designed to improve children, adult and family outcomes in health, social services, early care, and education, where our work spans mathematics education, language and literacy, the learning sciences, sociocultural approaches, developing statistical and analytic methods, and educational policy.
Cross-disciplinary efforts are strong across the college and university. Three organizations in particular add to the strengths of UD’s cross-disciplinary work: the Data Science Institute, a cross-campus initiative from all seven colleges at UD, which aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research in data science by offering interdisciplinary training in cutting-edge exploratory techniques such as video image analysis; UD’s Partnership for Public Education, which embodies UD’s commitment to applying research to practice and policy; the Center for Research in Education and Social Policy, whose mission is to conduct rigorous research, program evaluation, and policy analysis to inform decisions at the local, state, and federal levels. Also contributing to our work is UD’s Center for the Study of Diversity, which promotes academic research and scholarship that facilitates dialogues about and understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity.
The SOE offers an undergraduate major in elementary teacher education and undergraduate minors in educational studies, educational technology, and urban education. The School supports several robust graduate programs at both the master’s and doctoral level, including Ph.D. programs in education, economic education, and educational statistics and research methods; an Ed.D. in educational leadership; and an Ed.S. program in school psychology.
In the last several years, faculty have garnered external funding in excess of $21 million and the college ranks among the top universities nationally in obtaining federal support for education research. Additionally, faculty in the School of Education are deeply engaged with K-12 schools and organizations that serve students and educational professionals in Delaware and other states. They are recognized for their contributions to local, state and national conversations about critical educational issues, lead organizations working to address those issues, and provide a range of supports to the agencies at the front lines of improving educational opportunities and outcomes. The faculty are a methodologically diverse and collegial group of nationally and internationally known scholars.
