Position: The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks a visionary, strategically oriented individual to serve as professor and head of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS). The department head is responsible for leadership of all departmental programs and administrative planning, fiscal management, human resources, and facilities. The department head reports directly to the dean of the CEHHS. The head serves as a member of the college’s Administrative Council. The successful candidate will provide leadership during a time of significant growth within the department to accomplish the department’s strategic goals and objectives. The successful candidate needs to be a transformational leader capable of leading significant, positive change. Additionally, the department head is expected to effectively advocate for the department to external constituencies and the administration within the university; recruit, motivate, and strengthen faculty, staff and students; foster an environment of collegiality, teamwork, diversity and respect; interact with faculty, students, and stakeholders to determine and promote the departmental vision and priorities; guide the department in its mission related to teaching, research, and service; cultivate departmental research activity to include external funding; create new revenue streams and increase private donations and endowments; and have a passion for leadership and a commitment to improving educational experiences in the community.
Programs: The department’s current programs include an undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies, and graduate programs in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, and K-12 Educational Administration. The department is also host to three highly active centers – Postsecondary Education Research Center (PERC), Center for Educational Leadership (CEL), and College Access and Persistence Services (CAPS) Outreach Center. The head will have the opportunity to strengthen and expand the existing degree programs.

Required Qualifications: Doctoral degree in educational leadership or related field or experience in a department of educational leadership; accomplished in administrative, managerial and leadership best practices; previously earned tenure in a higher education institution; must qualify for the rank of professor; history of outreach and engagement; an extensive record of scholarship in education; an excellent record of teaching and mentoring; effective communication and interpersonal skills; and substantive commitment and demonstrated contributions towards diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Desired Qualifications: Experience with strategic planning; history of external funding in scholarship as a principal investigator or director and substantive experience in some or all of the fields/programs in the current department.
