Summary:
The College of Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biology Education, to begin in August 2019. Teach high-quality secondary science teaching methods course. Work collaboratively with university faculty members and public school personnel. Foster development of mentor teaching networks within local districts and schools . Supervise pre-service teachers during their student teaching or internship experience. Advise students regarding coursework, field work, and academic endeavors. Provide quality mentoring to undergraduate students. Engage in and assist with ongoing Science Education program evaluation. Participate in professional development with peers and public school personnel. Prepare instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, etc.) as necessary. Maintain a student-centered approach to education. Participate in activities associated with the Utah Science Teachers Association and the Utah State Science Education Coordinating Committee. Responsibilities will include teaching the Teaching Methods in Science class (BIOL/CHEM/GEO/PHYS 4200), being a liaison between UVU's science secondary education programs and local school districts, and evaluating student teaching.
Required Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. in biology with specialization in science education, or an earned Ph.D or Ed.D. in science education/biology education prior to the start of employment required; and a minimum of three years experience teaching secondary school science.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrable ability to teach high-quality secondary science teaching methods course.
- Ability to work collaboratively with university faculty members and public school personnel.
- Skill in fostering the development of mentor teaching networks within local districts and schools .
- Ability to supervise pre-service teachers during their student teaching or internship experience.
- Knowledge to advise students regarding coursework, field work, and academic endeavors.
- Skill in mentoring undergraduate students.
- Knowledge to prepare instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, etc.) as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of successful university teaching with undergraduate students.
Demonstrated ability to develop and support university and K-12 partnerships.
Evidence of ability to supervise and mentor pre-service and in-service science teachers.
Commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level using inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to function effectively in classroom and laboratory environments.
