Job Description

Old Dominion University’s Higher Education (HIED) Program in the Department of Educational Foundations & Leadership invites applications from candidates with strong scholarly and professional achievement for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Higher Education beginning July 2024. We encourage individuals with strong professional credentials in one or more of the following scholarly areas to apply: Student Affairs, Higher Education Policy & Governance, Accountability & Assessment, Institutional Effectiveness, and/or Strategic Planning. We are open to candidates with other higher education focus areas.

Candidates for this position should exhibit the ability to engage in a rigorous research agenda on topics related to higher education, publish in peer-reviewed research journals and outlets, and generate research-related grant activity. The candidate for this position is expected to teach synchronous distance courses and face-to-face courses for students in the Higher Education Program. Responsibilities:
  • Conduct an active scholarship agenda leading to refereed publications, other forms of scholarship, and external grant funding.
  • Teach face-to-face and synchronous distance courses for master’s, education specialist, and Ph.D. students.
  • Mentor/advise students at all graduate levels.
  • Lead and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
  • Collaborate with state, national, and international higher education leaders.
  • Actively engage in professional service organizations within the university and the profession.



Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in an administrative position at a four-year institution of higher education or related agency or organization.
  • Evidence of scholarly, published research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • A well-developed research agenda.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume teaching responsibilities both in face-to-face and distance learning contexts, effectively incorporating technology in both.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a culture of collaboration, inclusion, equity, and diversity.
  • Established teaching philosophy and demonstrated potential for effective postsecondary instruction.

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

A doctorate degree from a regionally accredited university in Higher Education, or a related field.

Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification

 Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience in a full-time and/or adjunct faculty position in a Higher Education or Student Affairs graduate program.
  • At least 3 publications in refereed scholarly or professional journals.
  • Active engagement and/or leadership in higher education or related professional associations.
  • Receipt of funding as a PI or Co-PI on research or service grant(s).
  • Service on master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation committees.
  • Evidence of higher education student advising experience.
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively with others in a higher education context.
