The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in CHEMISTRY EDUCATION, to begin in August 2019. The successful candidate is expected to play an important role in the planned revitalization of our Ph.D. program in Chemistry Education, while also engaging in externally funded research and contributing to the teaching mission of the UNT Chemistry Department.

The UNT Chemistry Department has a strong tradition of collaborative and interdisciplinary research that is strongly integrated with the education of undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students. Our department has historically had a very active Chemistry Education Ph.D. program, and our faculty views this program as a key component of our strategic plan to grow and diversify interdisciplinary research in our department. There are significant opportunities for synergy with UNT’s new university-wide initiatives aimed at improving the educational experience through active learning, effective online instruction, and adoption of new educational technologies.

The new faculty member will be expected to: 1) develop a vigorous and nationally recognized program of research and scholarship in Chemistry Education; 2) advise doctoral students (and ideally undergraduates) in research; 2) obtain external funding by writing successful research proposals; 3) develop and teach graduate-level courses in Chemistry Education; 4) contribute to undergraduate teaching, as appropriate; and 5) participate in departmental and professional service activities.

The new faculty member will have opportunities to interface with many established programs on campus that focus on aspects of science education, including the Teach North Texas (TNT) teacher training program, the NetDragon Digital Research Center, the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (a residential magnet high school for high achievers), and a vibrant group of TRIO programs that includes several Upward Bound centers and a McNair Scholars program. UNT’s location also provides almost limitless opportunities for partnerships with other educational institutions that are interested in improving science education for the diverse and rapidly growing population of the Dallas-Fort Worth/North Texas region.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemistry Education, or a closely related field is required.

Nationally, UNT is ranked in the top tier of research universities according to the Carnegie Classification (R1-Very High Research Activity). With a diverse population of over 38,000 students, UNT is one of the largest educational institutions in Texas and the most comprehensive university in the Dallas-Fort Worth/North Texas area. The UNT Chemistry Department has 20 faculty members, about 100 graduate students, and about 300 undergraduate majors, and is entering a growth phase with plans to hire up to 10 tenure-track faculty members over the next five years. Current research strengths include computational chemistry, photochemistry, and materials chemistry, as well as a growing interdisciplinary emphasis on chemical biology.
