The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University seeks an assistant professor of science education with expertise in K-8 elementary/intermediate/middle level science teaching and learning. This position is a 9-month, tenure-track position with a starting date of August 15, 2023. Responsibilities include:
● Teaching undergraduate methods courses as part of the elementary education program as well as graduate courses in science education
● Working collaboratively with program and college faculty to revise current undergraduate courses and field experiences with a focus on improving educational outcomes and promoting educational equity
● Coordinating and collaborating in the development of school-based practica
● Recruiting, advising and mentoring graduate students
● Collaborating on learning, discovery, and engagement activities (including seeking external funding to support those activities) within the College of Education, across the university, and with K-12 schools
● Developing a strong area of research and scholarship that informs theory and effective practice in science education
● Demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice in education through scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement

Opportunities exist for the development of online courses and graduate courses, as well as collaboration with journals in the college and with centers across the university, including the Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST)—an interdisciplinary center in the College of Education with faculty, staff and graduate students from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.

● Earned doctorate in science education or a closely related field, with an emphasis in K-8 elementary/intermediate/middle level science teaching
● Earned undergraduate degree in a science discipline (e.g., biology, chemistry, earth/space science, physics/astronomy) or elementary education with the equivalent of a minor in a science discipline
● Demonstrated scholarship in science education or a closely related field
● 3+ years of teaching or equivalent school-based/outreach experience (grades K-12) in U.S. schools
● This position requires an on-campus, face-to-face presence

● Experience teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students
● Experience teaching science methods courses and supervising elementary/intermediate and/or middle level preservice teachers
● Experience working with children in grades K-8
● Research commitment to diversity and inclusion

SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM FACULTY share responsibility for the preparation of undergraduate elementary education majors. These undergraduate students are housed in the College of Education. Program faculty also teach and advise masters and PhD students seeking advanced degrees in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on science education.
