The Faculty of Education at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Ethical and Legal Studies in Education. This is a tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2024.

The Faculty of Education is one of the leading faculties of education in Canada with a particular focus on research with social impact.  We are an engaged and deliberately diverse community of faculty, educators, staff, and students committed to academic and research excellence, democratic practices and the promotion of decolonizing, equitable, and inclusive education.

We look forward to hiring a colleague with expertise in historical, contemporary, and emerging ethical and legal issues in K-12 education. They will teach the mandatory curriculum in core domains of undergraduate ethical legal and policy studies and their implications for professional practice, organization, curriculum, administration, policy and crucially, for inclusive education, areas that serve the B.Ed centrally. They will contribute to ongoing curriculum development in this domain. At a minimum level this crucial hire will ensure we are compliant with Ministry of Education and Ontario College of Teachers B.Ed accreditation requirements and ensure our graduates have been taught how to teach ethically legally and safely in diverse classrooms. The successful applicant will contribute fully and broadly to the Bachelor of Education, and the Graduate Program within the Faculty.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Degree: PhD or PhD by the appointment’s start in Education or a closely related field is required.
  • Scholarship:
  • A coherent and well-articulated program of research and specialization in historical, contemporary, and emerging ethical and legal issues in K-12 education. Their central scholarly focus will inform core domains of undergraduate ethical legal and policy studies and their implications for areas that serve the B.Ed centrally.
  • A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research and/or research creation.
  • A commitment to research for positive social impact.
  • A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field with a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; and/or other scholarly productions; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing).
  • Teaching:
  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g., teaching and supervision record; teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations.
  • Strong commitment to pedagogy and student success, the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to teacher education teaching, learning and program design, and evidence of good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.
  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching at the university level (as evidenced through teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and/or peer evaluations).
  • Expertise in K-12 education and teacher education.
  • Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
  • Additional:
    • A strong commitment to the social justice goals of the Faculty, evident in all activities above.
    • A record or evident promise of making valuable contributions through administrative and committee service.
