The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. We are strongly committed to all members of our community: students, faculty, and staff. The Mechanical Engineering department consists of approximately 35 faculty, 400 undergraduate students, and 400 graduate students. The department is on a positive trajectory with a new building scheduled to open in 2023. We have of a young, growing and gender-diverse faculty who have created a dynamic environment with innovative research in both traditional and non-traditional domains addressing societal challenges. Thus, the department provides an ideal environment for researchers from diverse technical backgrounds to develop an academic career.

We have multiple positions open to candidates from a broad range of engineering backgrounds:

General Call: Consistent with the current breadth of departmental research, we welcome applicants with expertise across all research areas related to mechanical engineering broadly defined and who have the ability to contribute synergistically to existing research activities in the department and university at large.
Targeted and Cross-Cutting Domains: We welcome applicants looking to address emerging challenges in particular fields both within and outside the traditional scope of mechanical engineering. These include controls, as well as cross-cutting efforts to integrate mechanical engineering disciplines with robotics, artificial intelligence/machine learning, medicine and medical technologies.

Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering has a highly collaborative environment with a rich history of interdisciplinary research. Some of that interdisciplinary research has been spurred by the significant number of faculty who have joint appointments in two departments. We are interested in further accelerating the potential for interdisciplinary research by recruiting faculty jointly with other departments, to include individuals who encompass multiple specialties. Potential examples include, but are not limited to: controls, robotics, or mechatronics with Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Robotics Institute; Machine Learning potentially with any unit; biomedical with Biomedical Engineering; and, policy as relates to autonomy, energy and environment, manufacturing, and biomedical with Engineering and Public Policy.

Expectations: You are expected to contribute to teaching our core undergraduate courses, electives, and graduate courses. Tenure-track faculty at Carnegie Mellon carry a moderate teaching load that allows time for quality research and close involvement with students. We expect you to establish and grow a strong externally supported and internationally recognized research program, contribute to our teaching mission, be a passionate mentor and advisor, and serve with colleagues to help promote the general success of the department.

Eligibility: We are seeking individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have demonstrated dedication to our core values: scientific truth, creativity, quality, innovation, and engineering solutions. Faculty positions are primarily at the Assistant Professor level; however, appointments may be made at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor depending on your qualifications.

a research statement, typically on the order of five pages, outlining a compelling vision for a research program that ultimately goes beyond your prior (typically PhD or post-doc) experience. Statements also should include a longer-term vision with more far-reaching plans, which may reference potential collaborators in the department and elsewhere at Carnegie Mellon.
a teaching statement, typically on the order of two pages, outlining both your experience and philosophy as well as a list of courses you are interested in teaching.
a diversity statement, typically on the order of two pages, outlining how you have contributed to and plan to contribute to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
