Job Description

The Instructional Designer will work directly with faculty members, instructional technologists, and other instructional designers to identify, develop, and improve online and hybrid graduate courses offered across a variety of academic disciplines. This person will be responsible for supporting instructors in addressing complex teaching and learning issues. This role combines elements of learning consulting, instructional design, training, and content development skill sets to provide holistic learning experience design. This position will act as the lead role in creating multimedia assets for all course development projects across the unit using videography, Articulate 360, and other tools. 

The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple project timelines, communications, and milestones.


Primary Responsibilities

Course Development:

  • Design holistic learning solutions engaging team members and community partners in the design process to ensure the design is flexible and addresses the unique needs of the learners
  • Guide faculty through the course development process, from storyboarding to deployment in Canvas.
  • Work with faculty to create new and revise existing online and hybrid course materials.

Faculty Training:

  • Train and support of faculty members in the use of systems, software, and tools for online and hybrid teaching and learning, including but not limited to Canvas, Zoom, Panopto, Proctorio, PollEverywhere,, Playposit, and TurnItIn.
  • Promote and facilitate the effective use of new and existing teaching and learning technologies;
  • Promote the innovative use of interactive multimedia features and IT capabilities among faculty and students.
  • Develop training documentation, particularly materials that focus on tools & features that promote class interaction
  • Plan and facilitate one-on-one and small group training sessions for faculty.

Project Management:

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff colleagues, and external partners on a variety of projects.
  • Seek opportunities to apply innovative design thinking to development projects  
  • Manage short- and long-term projects, ensuring on-time completion.
  • Contribute to the improvement of WebCampus processes, especially those that impact students and cross divisional boundaries.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of student workers.
  • Adapt to changing business requirements, projects, and resources and use agile approaches to meet business needs.
  • Assist colleagues with other projects, as needed.

Other Area Duties and Initiatives:

  • Research and evaluate potential future systems, software, and tools for use in online and hybrid courses.
  • Leverage data to measure outcomes and ensure that learning solutions result in the intended impact.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with SMEs and the broader Stevens communities of practice, and other stakeholder groups critical to the success of this position
  • Build networks inside and outside Stevens for keeping up to date on learning trends; stay up to date with the teaching and learning sciences.
  • Assist the WebCampus Manager in maintaining core elements of the WebCampus infrastructure, including the area website and other resources
  • Support the Quality Assurance process
  • Work with the Senior Instructional Designer and Associate Director in the institutionalization of the OLC Quality Scorecard as needed.
  • Assist in other appropriate tasks related to maintaining the quality and integrity of WebCampus programs.

Required Qualifications


  • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization (Instructional Design, Learning Technology, or related field) plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of teaching and learning strategies to promote active learning, evidence-based practices, critical thinking, and the use of technology to enhance student success.


  • Experience in the use of general and specialist content authoring tools, such as Articulate 360, PowerPoint, and various multimedia applications (video and audio). Examples of work in Storyline 360 will be requested.
  • Work with faculty to produce multimedia elements (audio, video, graphics, animations) for online and hybrid courses.
  • Facilitate audio and video capture, production, editing, storage, and publishing
  • Experience with learning management systems (preferably Canvas)
  • Experience creating video and handling post-production editing
  • A consistent record of successful project management including the ability to meet project quality expectations and schedule commitments
  • A very high level of determination and creativity
  • The ability to work independently (a self-starter) as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent decision-making, organizational and communication skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; strong editing abilities
  • Reliable, dependable, and detail-oriented with strong organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills
  • The willingness to complete other duties as assigned

Other Qualifications

  • Experience designing for STEM disciplines
  • Experience with Quality Assurance of Teaching & Learning (Quality Matters, OLC, OSCQR, and the like)
  • Familiarity with WCAG and Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Experience with educational research projects, evaluation, and assessment methods.
  • Familiarity with programming fundamentals (HTML, CSS or JavaScript)
  • Proficiency with audio and video editing software (i.e. Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Camtasia) as well as content management systems (i.e. Panopto).
