Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of Educational Leadership within the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) seeks an outstanding Visiting Assistant Professor for a nine-month, non- tenure-track/non-tenured position in our graduate programs in Curriculum Studies in Equity and Curriculum and Instruction beginning August 2022. This is a one-year fixed-term appointment, renewable year-to-year, up to three years. Primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Developing and teaching graduate courses focused on equity, diverse knowledge systems, anti-racism, transformative praxis, decolonization, and issues of import to education globally [Face-2-Face, hybrid, and/or online]

  • Contributing expertise to the development of the Curriculum and Instruction concentration of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and the M.Ed. in Curriculum Studies for Equity

  • Engaging in scholarly activities through research, presentations, and/or involvement in professional/scholarly associations

  • Actively participating in departmental service including mentoring students, serving on doctoral committees, and assisting with the administration of programs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants for this position must hold a terminal degree (i.e., Ph.D., Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction, Social or Cultural Foundations of Education, Sociology of Education, or related field (e.g., Cultural Anthropology) from an accredited (U.S.) or certified (International) postsecondary institution. ABD candidates may be considered depending on the expected completion date.

Demonstrated evidence of ways research, teaching, and service contribute to building and sustaining equitable, diverse, and inclusive communities. 

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Evidence of or potential for scholarship, research, teaching, or practice that advances equity, diverse knowledge systems, anti-racism, transformative praxis, decolonization, and issues of import to education globally

  • Evidence of successful college-level teaching [Face-2-Face, hybrid, and/or online]

  • Experience leading and conducting research through critical social theories 

  • Experience with community engagement for advancing equity in Indigenous, K12, post-secondary, informal learning, nonprofit, police, military, health care, research, or other contexts 

  • If the candidate is ABD, the terminal degree should be conferred by August 1, 2022.

The Department of Educational Leadership in the Watson College of Education is a diverse and dynamic group of educators and scholars committed to improving leadership at all levels of education. Through our teaching, scholarship, and service, we facilitate understanding, research, and implementation of practices that promote social justice, global perspectives, creativity and innovation, and capacity building—practices we believe are essential to educational leadership.

 The Department of Educational Leadership is committed to the preparation, support, and collaboration with educators who seek or hold leadership positions in schools, school districts, boards, state and federal departments, agencies or higher education. The Department of Educational Leadership offers four master’s-level graduate programs (Curriculum Studies in Equity, Evaluation and Organizational Learning, Higher Education, and School Administration) and three concentrations within the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership (Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, and Higher Education), as well an undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies, and four post-baccalaureate certificates (Coaching and Mentoring, College Teaching and Learning, Community College Leadership, and Evaluation). 

College/School Information
The Watson College of Education (WCE) ( is a rapidly growing college with over 65 tenure-track faculty members working in undergraduate and master’s programs in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education and the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education, and master’s and doctoral programs in the Department of Educational Leadership. It offers several international study programs, a newly developed laboratory school, and maintains partnerships with numerous school districts, community colleges, and colleges/universities in the region.
