  • Postdoctoral Fellowship
    Learning and Instruction
University at Buffalo, The State University of New York

The Department of Learning and Instruction at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Postdoctoral Fellowship. The ideal candidate will contribute to a three-year National Science Foundation funded project (Award #: 2314260), STEMcyclists: Black and Brown Youth Transforming Science and Engineering via Bikes. This AISL, university-community collaboration project is a sustainable and capacity-building collaboration of researchers and three urban bike-centered community organizations (GObike Buffalo, Slow Roll Buffalo, and the Buffalo United Front, Inc.’s East Side Bike Club-ESBC) that engages urban Black and Brown youth in a three-year, transformative informal STEM learning experience centered on the medium of the bike and biking.

Specifically, cohorts of youth—rising ninth and tenth graders—will be recruited from within the City of Buffalo, NY, to participate in culturally sustaining, place-based activities during a two-week summer institute and three fall and two spring Saturday sessions. The individual will report directly to and be mentored by Dr. Noemi Waight, lead PI, and will be based at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), Buffalo, New York.

Though not a hard requirement, we encourage applications from individuals who have a history with riding bicycles and are comfortable riding with groups. Training on bicycle riding and safety will be provided if requested, and the project supports adaptive cycles (such as tricycles, recumbents, and hand cycles) for applicants who require them.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

    • The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the PI and other team members, including our community partners.

    • The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in all phases of the STEMcyclists project for three years including project planning, design, development and implementation of a 2-week summer institute and fall/spring Saturday sessions.

    • The postdoctoral fellow will also assist the PIs with data collection, analysis, manuscript preparation, and dissemination including publishing and presenting at STEM-related conferences.

    • Communicate with community partners, youth, parents/guardians, and school officials to recruit youth participants; parent orientation on the STEMcyclists program, organization and participation in project-related planning meetings and events that include youth, their families, and community partners; as well as, creating and maintaining the administrative infrastructure for the project.

    • Prepare and publish manuscripts for publication and dissemination at relevant conferences

    • Assist with grant administration

    • Assist with grant proposal preparation

    • Provide clear and regular communication to the PI on research progress, technique, and findings

    • Under the guidance of the supervisor/mentor, provide training on research techniques and methods

    • Present work at conferences and program reviews

    • Collect and analyze data related to the STEMcyclists program

    • Ensure IRB requirements are met within the project

    • Work independently as well as with supervisor/mentor and coordinate project activities with graduate research assistants

This position is based on grant funding and will be reviewed year to year up to 3 years.

Review of Applications will begin November 15, 2024, and continue until position is filled. The candidate will ideally start in January 2025.

A background check is required for this position.
