The School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) of Fairfield University announces a senior tenure-track position as an advanced Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in TESOL, World Language, and bilingual education beginning with the 2026-27 academic year pending final budget approval. The MA and 6th Year Certificate of Advanced Study programs in TESOL and bilingual education, and the BA and MA 5th -year and traditional MA in secondary World Language certification programs are housed in the department of Educational Studies and Teacher Preparation (ESTP). They offer undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to earn initial teaching certification or to pursue professional education and cross-endorsements.
The person appointed will be the programs’ director, a scholar of second language theory and pedagogical practice, with knowledge of curriculum and program development, on-line teaching, and is excited by opportunities for growth and collaboration across disciplines. He or she is expected to be knowledgeable about diversity and related social issues and concerns, as well as passionately committed to the Jesuit mission and working for and with students, families, and communities. Ideally, our new colleague will have authentic, first-hand experience in second language teaching and issues related to linguistic and cultural diversity. Fluency in a second language is required.
As program director, he or she will manage program business such as admissions, program accreditation and certification requirements, and mentoring part-time and junior faculty who teach in the program. He or she will work collegially with faculty in ESTP, SEHD, and the university, advise graduate students, teach program courses, demonstrate leadership and vision in curriculum development for the programs. He/she will also have opportunities to engage as an advocate in and for local schools and communities, maintain scholarly endeavors, and serve Fairfield University and his or her profession.
The person appointed will have a terminal degree in Bilingual/TESOL education or related fields such as language & literacy or educational linguistics; successful teaching experience in bilingual/TESOL education in elementary or secondary schools; a record of successful teaching at the college or graduate level; evidence of scholarly accomplishments; and professional and university service. Successful experience with CAEP accreditation, grant writing, teacher certification, and knowledge of issues related to bilingual special education are highly desirable.
