Due to expansion, Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) is recruiting two faculty members in Multilingual Education.

NUGSE began providing its first Master’s and Ph.D. programs in September 2013, supported by its strategic partners, the University Of Cambridge Faculty of Education and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School Of Education. Still expanding, NUGSE currently offers a M.Sc. in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Multilingual Education, and a Ph.D. in Education, a M.Sc. in Educational Leadership offers specializations in School Education, Inclusive Education and Higher Education.

NUGSE plays a key role in driving education reform in Kazakhstan, and faculty members who are keen to make a difference through work with schools, other universities and the Ministry of Education and Science are especially welcome. The School also houses a Research Institute and a Projects and Professional Development Center, and plays a major role nationally in conducting educational research and advising on policy.

Job Description

Full Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Higher Education

 The successful applicant will hold a doctoral degree in education with research in one or more of the following areas in inclusive education: inclusive schooling, curriculum, assessment, psychology and counselling, assistive technology, rural and marginalized populations, leadership, policy and governance, inter-sectional studies such as culture and disability, and specialized educational needs. Experience and teaching in educational contexts in either school and/or higher education is essential.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria - Assistant Professor

ESSENTIAL

  1. A Ph.D. in relevant discipline
  2. Experience of teaching in postgraduate programs, including course design and student research supervision; ability to teach in face-to-face, on-line, and blended settings.
  3. Scholarly research reputation underpinned by publications in quality journals, knowledge translation expertise, and success in obtaining external research grants.
  4. Positive engagement with research, community, industry and government to enhance the national standing of the discipline within the inclusive education sector
  5. Demonstrated capacity for teaching, research, and managing research projects.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
  7. Thorough understanding of international conventions, frameworks, and policies concerning equity in education such as Sustainable Development Goals SDG4, United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, Salamanca Statement.

DESIRABLE

  1. Membership in relevant professional associations.
  2. Potential to contribute to the long-term development of the academic and research environment at NUGSE.
  3. Knowledge of Kazakhstan and/or Central Asia/post-Soviet contexts.
  4. Supervision of postgraduate students.

  Selection Criteria - Associate Professor

ESSENTIAL

  1. A Ph.D. in relevant discipline.
  2. Excellent record of teaching in postgraduate programs, including curriculum design and research supervision; ability to teach in face-to-face and on-line and blended learning settings. At least four years of post-terminal degree teaching experience, with at least two year of teaching at the graduate level at institutions of higher education.
  3. Well-recognised research reputation underpinned by publications in quality journals,  knowledge translation expertise, and success in obtaining external research grants, evidence of leading in research project of national and international importance.
  4. Evidence of at least five (at least three in the last three years) research papers published in journals of international repute or the equivalent in books, and book chapters which demonstrate a high quality of research as judged by experts in the appointee’s field of specialization. 
  5. Positive engagement with research, community, industry and government to enhance the national standing of the discipline within the inclusive education sector.
  6. Successful record of achieving milestones in leadership of teaching, research, and/ or project management. Demonstrated capacity and enthusiasm for leadership of teaching, research and project management.
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues, lead in a multicultural academic environment.
  8. Thorough understanding of policies relevant to equity in education including ethnic and cultural minorities, and socially disadvantaged groups.
  9. Willingness to actively contribute to the national education reform mission of the School and University through collaboration and outreach activities with the wider education community in Kazakhstan.  
  10. Thorough understanding of international policies such as Sustainable Development Goals and specifically SDG 4, legislative frameworks the United Nations Convention such as the Rights of Persons with Disability.

DESIRABLE

  1. Experience in leadership positions at relevant professional associations.
  2. Knowledge of Kazakhstan and/ or Central Asia/ post-Soviet contexts.
  3. Participation in community engagement activities.

Selection Criteria - Professor

ESSENTIAL

  1. PhD in Relevant Discipline.
  2. Excellent record of scholarly learning and teaching in undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs, including innovative curriculum design and research supervision. At least eight years of post-terminal degree teaching experience, with at least three years of teaching at the graduate level at institutions of higher education.
  3. Internationally established research reputation at the Professorial level underpinned by publications in recognised journals, knowledge translation expertise, and success in obtaining external research grants.
  4. Evidence of at least 10 research publications (at least three in the last three years) in journals of international repute (or the equivalent in books, book chapters, refereed working papers, and consulting) which should show high quality of research and scholarship as judged by experts in the appointee’s field of specialization.
  5. Evidence of successful contribution to developing a direction of research, leading in research projects as a primary investigator, including grants of national and international importance.
  6. Previous experience in the supervision, management and timely completion of doctoral students, including advising and improving on research excellence, career development and candidature management.
  7. Positive engagement with research, community, industry and government to enhance the national standing of the discipline within the inclusive education sector.
  8. Successful record of achieving milestones of strategic importance in leadership of teaching, research, and/ or project management.
  9. Proven high-level face-to-face and online teaching skills, and course design employing varying modes and delivery designs for an inclusive education curriculum. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues, lead in a multicultural academic environment.
  10. Capacity to assume a senior leadership role in teaching, research and service in the School and University.
  11. Thorough understanding of policies relevant to equity in education such as ethnic and cultural minorities, socially disadvantaged groups such as Sustainable Development Goals and specifically SDG 4, legislative frameworks the United Nations Convention such as the Rights of Persons with Disability
  1. DESIRABLE

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment:

Initial appointment is on 3-year renewable contracts and will be subject to annual performance reviews. An attractive remuneration package will include:
