Preliminary Teacher Preparation Programs

  • California Preliminary Multiple-Subjects Teaching Credential
  • California Preliminary Single-Subject Teaching Credential
  • California Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Mild/Moderate Disabilities
  • California Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Preliminary and Induction Teacher Preparation Programs meet the standards for and have been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), leading to a California Preliminary or Clear Teaching Credential. Students who wish to practice in a state other than California will have additional licensing requirements to complete prior to practicing in a state outside of California. Prior to enrollment, prospective students must review the lists below to determine whether this program meets the educational requirements in a specific state. Once this information has bee reviewed, contact the Education department at educationdepartment@msmu.edu to discuss the process of obtaining a teaching or cleared credential in a state outside of California.

Other Important Notes

There is no national teaching credential or uniform requirements for a teaching credential. All states determine their own unique requirements and the MSMU preliminary teacher preparation programs are accredited for licensure only in California. Most states have provisions for individuals, credentialed in California, to teach on a temporary basis while they complete the additional requirements needed to secure a credential in that state.

All jurisdictions that participate in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement may choose to have additional requirements for educators who are coming from another jurisdiction.  These additional requirements are known as “Jurisdiction Specific Requirements” (JSRs).  Most times these additional requirements vary upon the educator’s years of experience.  Some jurisdictions, however, consider themselves “full-reciprocity” and do not have any additional requirements. 

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE TEACHER CANDIDATES:  Each state is responsible for its own certification/licensure requirements, which may change without notice to NASDTEC or your university's certification officers or your state's office of certification.  You must contact the office of certification in any state to which you may be relocating to get the most accurate information on certification requirements. One important guideline is that reciprocity is always easier if you completed the certification requirements and obtained your teaching credential in the state where you completed your program requirements.

  1. States where MSMU’s preliminary teacher preparation programs MEET educational requirements:
    • Curriculum requirements (including internship/practicum/experience hours required to graduate) must meet all requirements mandated by the State
  2. States where MSMU's preliminary teacher preparation programs DO NOT MEET educational requirements
    • Curriculum requirements do not match up with requirements mandated by the State
  3. States where MSMU’s preliminary teacher preparation programs have not made a determination
    • Research is still in progress
