My research interests are driven by a strong belief in the importance of music in the lives and development of young children. My MA (Hons) thesis focused on the musical engagement of 3 year olds in a specialist music program. I have since built on this research by exploring the musical engagement of young children with communication and cognitive disabilities.
My PhD research involved an exploration of the role of songs in young children's musical cultures. This project had a creative component - the composition of original songs for young children - and a research component - study of the 'lives' of the songs in a long day care setting.
I am co-chair of the Early Childhood Music Education Research Commission of ISME, the International Society for Music Education
