Engaging anthropological theories and methodologies, my research tends to address three general areas: literacy studies (including multilingual literacies), migration, and educator professional development. I have completed projects on youth and adult literacy programs in Brazil; Freirean-inspired literacy programs; a bilingual high school for newcomer Latino immigrant youth in New York City; schooling for Haitian-descent youth in the Dominican Republic; the international expansion of early grade reading programs; learner-centered pedagogies in Tanzania; and refugee education in Kenya. My current research considers the impact of Dominican maternal migration on the educational and migration aspirations of the children who remain in the Dominican Republic and who are born in or brought to the U.S.
