Dr. Stern is an historian of education. His research examines the historical intersection of race and education in the urban United States, particularly in the American South. In addition to his current book manuscript on segregated schooling, urban development, and racial inequality in nineteenth- and twentieth-century New Orleans, he is engaged in projects exploring high school student activism during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, school desegregation and resegregation, and the role of schools in the advent of mass incarceration. He is particularly drawn to projects that enhance understanding of national educational issues and policies through historical analyses of local conditions, communities, and actors
