Introduction: The College of Education at New Mexico State University seeks a talented and committed leader to serve as the next Department Head for newly forming School that will include the Departments of Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership & Administration, and Special Education. The Department Head will provide leadership to a unit that offers undergraduate and graduate programs (Master’s & Doctoral) in the areas of Curriculum & Instruction and Teacher Education, Educational Leadership (PK-20), and Special Education. The Department Head will also provide leadership in the overall operation and development of the newly forming School and assist in the implementation of the College’s and the University’s strategic goals. This leadership will entail managing department governance activities, addressing the needs and concerns of the College of Education, managing curriculum and instruction; contributing to the department’s teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities; supervising activities concerning faculty affairs and students; monitoring and managing the department budget and seeking additional funding; supervising office staff and resources; managing internal and external communication; and encouraging professional development of faculty and staff. It is expected that the department head will be present on campus during normal working hours for the university.

Responsibilities: This is a full-time, twelve-month appointment reporting to the Dean of the College. The Department Head will provide a vision for the School and possess the skills necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century through leadership, planning, coordination, and supervision in matters related to all budget, personnel, programs, and services of a multidiscipline School. This person will advise the Dean and Executive Council of the College on the matters related to the success of the College. The Department Head will be a leader with knowledge on issues and trends in education at the local, state, national, and international levels. Additional responsibilities include doing scholarship and service in support of the College’s mission: "Our mission is to serve the people of New Mexico through education, research, extension education, and public service with specific emphasis on innovative practices, overcoming barriers to learning, international activities, technology, and literacy for the diverse populations of New Mexico, surrounding states and border communities." The successful candidate is expected to embrace and demonstrate the six core values of the College of Education: Excellence, Integrity, Diversity, Transparency, Leadership, and Innovation.

Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate in an area comprising the School; Associate/Full Professor rank; successful leadership experience in university settings; experience with diverse students and communities; readiness to carry out distance education in a variety of modes; ability and desire to carry out scholarship and creative activity as defined by NMSU policy 5.90.4.2. Additionally, a candidate must be willing to collaborate with colleagues in the Department, College, and University; and have an ability to guide students, faculty and staff in how to use collaboration effectively in a leadership role. The successful candidate will be able to assist and provide guidance to the administration, faculty, and staff of the College of Education during this time of transition and evolution to distinct Schools.

Preferred Qualifications: Foremost the successful candidate will be a dedicated leader, demonstrating the capacities of leadership while promoting social justice in teaching and leadership. Teaching, research, service, and administrative experience in an academic setting. Other preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in fiscal and personnel management
  • Demonstrates a commitment to student success and building a relationship with the student body
  • Possess administrative experience with strong skills in communication, consensus building and multi-disciplinary cooperation in a complex environment
  • Ability to teach courses offered by the Department
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering and expanding relationships with alumni and practitioners
  • Understands the importance of providing positive leadership in the continued development and growth in the undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with and to steward diverse constituencies while building new relationships
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide guidance and leadership to developing faculty capacity in teaching, scholarship and service
  • Willingness to represent the Department at University and College events
